Bank of America’s New Offer for Short Sales

Struggling Homeowners May Receive Up to $30,000

By: Mickey Nathans

In mid May, Bank of America announced that they would begin giving homeowners up to $30,000 in payments if they agree to a short sale. The incentive behind these payments is quite simple – to avoid foreclosures. For those of you who are unfamiliar with short sales, it is applicable to homes with owners who have been delinquent on home payments. While a short sale is not ideal, it is preferable to a foreclosure for a few reasons. One of the primary reasons is the longevity of a forclosure process for both the bank and the homeowner. Another reason that short sales are ideal in this situation, is the overall attitude of the homeowners. During foreclosures, homeowners often become bitter and angry thus more likely to trash their property. With short sales though, it is a much smoother process so properties are less likely to be left unkept or destroyed by angry homeowners.

Bob Hora, an executive at Bank of America gave a statement on their new policy. “This program can help customers make a planned transition from ownership when home retention options have been exhausted or they make a decision not to keep the home.”

Bank of America first tried this new program in Florida during the fall of 2011. The program was successful in Florida so they decided to launch it nationally. Promoting short sales to homeowners who may feel stuck in their current situation will ultimately help save money and time for all parties involved.
